What is a SENG Parent Support Group?

Based on the Supporting the Emotional Needs of the Gifted (SENG) Model, a SENG Parent Support Group consists of 15-20 interested parents who read a chapter from A Parent’s Guide to Raising Gifted Children by SENG founder, Jim Webb, and discuss the recommended parenting strategies from the book and share parenting tips with each other. The group covers a wide range of strategies related to social and emotional issues.

Register for the October 4th SENG Parent Group.

Group discussion is guided by two parents with gifted children and have completed the SENG Parent Group program. Facilitators do not provide therapy, but instead focus on establishing a supportive, nonjudgmental atmosphere that promotes learning and encouraging participation from the group.

Who should attend?

Any parents with gifted, or potentially gifted, children are welcome to attend. It is best if two adults who are the most involved in the child's life come each week. This can include aunts, uncles, grandparents. Support comes in all numbers, so please feel welcome if only one family member can attend.

Why should I attend?

Raising your gifted child requires more than supporting their academic needs. Research shows that gifted students with strong social and emotional support from their families and their communities are better prepared to become independent, self-motivated and successful learners. SENG Parent groups provide research based strategies to help you parent and support your gifted child, while also connecting you to other parents who share your challenges. You don't have to go it alone!

As a participant, you will:

  • Identify the special emotional needs of gifted children and their families.
  • Develop a list of parenting strategies to support your family's emotional needs.
  • Learn how to be a better advocate for your gifted family.
  • Connect and learn from experienced parents just like you!

Who are the facilitators?

Filipina Pate, Parent of two gifted kids and President, DBC
Kim Servia, M.A.Ed., GT Specialist, SENG SMPG Facilitator, and Vice President, DCAGT
